Wizkid makes history, becomes first African artiste to be certified Platinum in Canada

Nigerian singer and Label executive, Ayo ‘Wizkid’ Balogun, has bagged another major milestone in his music career.

The award-winning singer’s 2017 hit single, ‘Come Closer’ with American rapper, Drake has been certified Platinum in Canada.

Music Canada announced the Platinum certification via its verified Twitter on Friday, January 15, 2021.

Music Canada, an association which represent the interests of companies that record, manufacture, produce, and distribute music in Canada.

It’s Twitter post reads;

“Come Closer,” the 2017 single by Nigerian artist @wizkidayo ft. @Drake, is now officially certified Canadian Platinum!”

According to Music Canada’s site, it recognizes the following Single Award tiers: Gold: 40,000 Units. Platinum: 80,000 Units. Multi-Platinum: 160,000 Units (increments of 80,000 thereafter)

This is the first time a song by a African-based artiste would go platinum in Canada. So it makes Wizkid, officially the first African musician to be certified platinum in Canada.
